Pick up the tooth by the crown (not the root), rinse gently with milk or saline if dirty, and try to place it back in the socket. Severe toothache often signals an infection or nerve issue and should be evaluated promptly. In the meantime: rinse with warm salt water, take over-the-counter pain reliever (ibuprofen or acetaminophen), and apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek. Save the crown if you can — store it in a small container or bag. Avoid chewing on that side. Over-the-counter dental cement (available at most pharmacies) can temporarily reattach a crown until you’re seen. Call Trinity Dental Arts as soon as possible; the underlying tooth can be vulnerable to damage or decay without the crown in place.

It depends on the severity. A small surface chip with no pain can usually wait until a regular appointment. A chip that exposes the inner layers of the tooth, causes pain, or has sharp edges that cut your tongue should be treated quickly to prevent further damage or infection.
